As a university student, I am regularly cooking meals for myself. I find that I either cook to much food or that I don’t eat the food I purchase before it goes bad. About 60% of food waste is considered edible, 20% is potentially edible, and 20% is considered inedible. More than half the food that is thrown out is in fact edible or could have been eaten if consumers had planned and stored their food purchases properly. It seems incredible that there is a food wastage problem, when millions of people are starving all over the world. Instead of throwing out the food that I can no longer eat, I have decided to use my leftover food in paintings and other art related projects. This will make use of the food that I would have otherwise thrown out and give it a purpose. This proved to be a very creative and fun use of my excess food. I have found that using food on a painting is actually quite difficult and I may start making sure that I don’t have any leftover food just so I don’t have to use it on anymore of my paintings.
